Belonging: a constant yearning
We come into this earth so vulnerable. We begin utterly incapable of meeting our own needs for survival. We don’t really ever forget this experience. It lives within us, in our bodies. It lives within us, in the unconscious daily drivers of our life. We are not built to survive alone.
3 billion years ago, when the first single cell organisms came to be on the planet, these cells started to figure something very important out. They learned that they could cooperate. Some cells were better at digesting, some were better and moving, some had stronger cell walls, some had weaker. These single cells developed all kinds of unique strengths and weaknesses over time. Through the trials of co-existence, these cells figured out ways to work together. This propelled what is probably the single most profound evolutionary step, these single cells started to encompass one another and to establish organ systems within the cell and then massed together to form multi-cellular organisms.
